06.10.10 | new review of the Maverick from Peter Burns, SoulMusicHQ from the UK
Jerrold Dubyk Quartet – The Maverick – Death Defying
The Canadian based Jerrold Dubyk Quartet knock out a great set for The Maverick album that was released last year. Tenor saxophonist Dubyk leads the band with an energy and enthusiasm that inspires them and keeps the listeners’ attention throughout. Producer Brad Turner also contributes some fine trumpet on the lengthy ‘Maverick’ (the Maverick is a yellow ’74 Ford saloon featured on the cover) and elsewhere. Both Jesse Cahill on drums and Chris Gestrin on Organ (Hammond B-3) give good support and enjoyable solos on this entertaining and exciting journey. From ‘Gotham’ the Maverick takes the ‘Low Road’ via ‘Breakfast On Me’, ‘Time Spent’, ‘Intrepid Norris’ to ‘You Take Care Of Me’. It’s a smooth ride and if, like me, this fine album leaves you ‘Hot n’ Ready’ to take another spin with these guys, they made an earlier album (I’ve not yet heard) The Way You See It, so get on board and bon voyage. Volcanic ash won’t slow this baby down.

05.21.09 | Review of the Maverick
Maverick puts sax man on road to recognition

BY ROGER LEVESQUE, FREELANCEMAY 15, 2009

Ask any local jazz musician about career goals. Chances are they'll involve a wider profile and greater musical opportunities.

Over the past year, reedman Jerrold Dubyk has been cultivating both. First, there was the "awesome" experience of playing for 30,000 people on the GM main outdoor stage at the 2008 International Jazz Festival in Montreal, where Dubyk's band came in second in the Grand Prix du Jazz competition.

Then, over the August long weekend last year, Dubyk lured several of Vancouver's top jazz players into Edmonton's Homestead Studios to record his second album as a leader, The Maverick, which is being released this week.

"This was the album I really wanted to make (the first time)," admits Dubyk, "but I wasn't sure how to do it at the time."

Instead, his solo debut was an impressive straight-ahead jazz date titled The Way You See It (2007). It certainly didn't hurt to get some experience under his belt before he took on The Maverick. It's more of a retro project that takes off from the great tradition of '60s soul-jazz and the sound of the Hammond B3 organ, drawing inspiration from Larry Young, Shirley Scott, Stanley Turrentine and others.

The new CD started coming together when Dubyk phoned trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist Brad Turner, a member of the Juno-Award-winning group Metalwood. Turner, who lives in Vancouver, was enthusiastic about the B3 concept, agreed to serve as producer, and convinced Dubyk to use two other hot West Coast players, keyboardist Chris Gestrin and drummer Jesse Cahill.

As a veteran of the local scene and jazz instructor in the music program at the Victoria School for the Arts, Dubyk knows as well as anyone that Edmonton has its share of excellent jazz players. But it never hurts to look further afield. The Maverick should help him win national attention.

Dubyk didn't know the other players well going in, but the result has an undeniable energy. The eight original tunes percolate with enthusiasm, or groove at ballad tempos with irresistible momentum and some of the saxophonist's best work yet.

That title, by the way, is a reference to the Ford vehicle, which was Dubyk's first car, a gift from his grandmother. A bright yellow Maverick figures on the album cover.

The new CD is available from CD Baby, iTunes or tonight at Victoria School (corner of 101st Street and Kingsway Avenue) as Dubyk leads a quartet of local players to mark the disc's release. Show time is 7:30 p.m. Admission is pay what you want, but $20 will also get you a copy of the CD.

11.16.07 | Dubyk's debut a jazz experience worth the wait...from Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal

Read what Roger Levesque wrote about the new CD on Nov. 16 in the Edmonton Journal...

Dubyk's debut a jazz experience worth the wait
Roger Levesque, Freelance

Pick up a copy of Jerrold Dubyk's new independently produced The Way You See It (CD Baby distribution) and you'll hear one of the most accomplished, varied, nicely paced jazz debuts around.

That's not a big surprise if you've heard the local tenor saxophonist perform recently, especially given his dozen years of experience playing professionally.

Dubyk admits he's been a bit tardy in putting out a disc, but it was worth the wait for this selection of intriguing, original and contemporary jazz. The reedman explains the eclectic set of tunes came both by chance and by design.

"I was writing in such a condensed period. But I also manipulated things by adding harmonic and rhythmic devices and different time signatures and chord changes into the tunes."

He says it's even more fun taking on the same material in live performance.

"Now that the guys in the band know the tunes better, they're bringing their own flavour to it and that's what I want when I play live."

American Jon Eshelman, who plays piano and B3 organ on the disc, is a pal from Dubyk's time in the masters program at New Jersey's Rutgers University.

Since Dubyk's return in 2005, he's been teaching at the Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts and planning the album with an eye to generating touring opportunities.

06.12.07 | "The Way You See It" will be released in the fall of 2007
At last, my first disc of original music that I recorded in January is now gone to press and I will be releasing it in the fall. I had a fantastic experience putting it together. I found out in mid-December '06 that I received an Alberta Foundation for the Arts recording grant and the session with Barry Allen at Homestead Studios was a great time. My great friend/pianist from New Jersey, Jon Eshelman agreed to come out and play on the recording and we had a great week together. Tyler Hornby came up from Calgary and Jeff Johnson played bass...both of them dove right into my music and sound fabulous...thanks to them. A couple of tracks from the session are up on the "listen" link. I hope you enjoy - Jerrold
